Happy New Year! Or is it?
Don't many of you long for something new as you turn the calendar from one year to the next? Wouldn't you like changing the number at the end of the year to make a difference?
While meditating on those same thoughts, words began to churn and a poem developed. I want to share it with you.
Is This the New Year?
Looking behind me, a journey quite long.
Things done or undone so goes my song.
I try to go back and do it again,
but a hand much stronger turns my chin.
Around I go – the path so clean.
Different seasons before me –
an expanse to be seen.
Is this the new year? Should I run and hide,
or settle in for another carnival ride?
Something catches my eye around the bend.
Curiosity leads me – this is the start not the end.
Sparkles and glitter call me just the same.
A bright colored bow on a package with my name.
Stillness and quiet high on this hill.
I open the gift and receive such a thrill.
Wind blows in my face with favorite smells and opens my eyes,
as rocks, flowers, and trees stretch and yawn and look very wise.
They tell me of things behind and before,
and caution and encourage to look up, not below.
An eagle, bluebird and cardinal come by and sing
of The Man who creates and knows everything.
If I follow Him, I will not go wrong.
He knows every note, He wrote every song.
New music calls me to dance down the path.
Then marble steps appear, and they chatter and laugh.
I hold on and step on and know I’m in flight.
The moon is so large, and it turns quickly night.
How softly I float near a small stream that calls me to drink
and wait for The Man to talk while I think.
He suddenly appears as if He’s always been there,
smiling like He knows every strand of my hair.
He pats my shoulder and says, “Do not fear.”
Just follow my leading and you’ll have a good year!
